Git Turns 20: Celebrating Two Decades of Developer Empowerment

In April 2005, amidst a backdrop of evolving needs in the open-source community, Linus Torvalds created Git — a fast, distributed version control system designed to support the Linux kernel development. Twenty years later, Git has become the cornerstone of modern software development, used by millions of developers worldwide and embraced across industries.

Git's success wasn't just due to its technical brilliance, though features like branching, merging, and distributed workflows certainly played a huge role. It was also built with transparency and collaboration in mind, enabling developers to track history, experiment fearlessly, and contribute regardless of geographic location.

In the early years, tools like git svn served as a bridge for teams transitioning from older systems. Over time, GUIs and hosting platforms like GitHub and GitLab further simplified use and made Git more accessible. GitLab, in particular, emerged as a fully integrated DevSecOps platform, evolving Git workflows to support the entire software development lifecycle.

Milestones such as the 1.0 release in December 2005, addition of submodules in 2007, and enhancements to rebasing and stash in the subsequent decade all marked Git’s evolution towards maturity. Staunchly open-source from the beginning, Git remained a beacon of the collaborative ethos that underpins so much of today’s development culture.

As we celebrate 20 years of Git, we not only honour a tool but the vibrant ecosystem it helped foster—one where developers innovate faster, experiment more freely, and build with confidence.
